it's the little things that count

A few Little Things...

I have been in the restaurant industry for 13 years and have seen some pretty fucked up things. To me what is worse than the occasional pube on a pie are the things we do every night. Sometimes it's because we are lazy, but mostly because we don't have time. Some examples.

When we are running low on spoons or coffee cups we just rinse them off instead of waiting for the dishwasher. Or at night many restaurants will only brew decaf coffee so as to not give someone regular instead of decaf. Or when you order a decaf espresso/cap they forget and it comes out regular. When butter comes back from a table only slightly used we send it to a new table. There is either the three or the five-second rule in many restaurants. Meaning if you drop something on the ground, like bread or silverware or something you have 3 seconds to pick it up and use it as if nothing happened.

Another little story. I was bartending in a tuxedo at a famously romantic restaurant in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. We got a lot of older celebrities in there. One day this woman came in for dinner - who is famous for her large breasts, big blond hair, and that 9-5 movie she did a while ago. Anyway she ordered a martini and the waitress wanted me to do something to it so I licked the inside of the glass and she placed the glass towards her so she would drink out of that side.

In the same restaurant the original owner was in a gay porn movie that was filmed on the stairs leading up to the Mezzanine level.
