served from a trash can

WHen I worked at the [location edited] theater in Denton, TX, we had a manager who was so tight about money that he wouldn't let us throw away the popcorn that remained at the end of the night. Instead, he had us scoop it into a trash can where we would put the lid on it over night and then in the morning we would serve this NASTY STALE POPCORN to our moviegoers attending the first film of the day. Some complained and got new popcorn (then WE were griped out in front of the customer by the manager for not making new popcorn as if it were our fault) but most just put more hydrogenated butter flavoring on it and ate the stuff.

In the summer of 96 there was somewhat of a cricket infestation. One day the crickets got into the popcorn over night. Of course, our manager kept us terrified of throwing anything away so we just picked out all the crickets we saw and served it to the unknowing customers anyway. Once we even saw one crawling around on the popcorn in the machine bin so we killed it right there in the bin along with the popcorn, scooped it out and threw it away, then continued to serve the cricket-tainted popcorn and hope that no one saw us do it.

I know crickets may be a delicacy overseas, but it's not the secret surprise you want when you take in a crappy flick like "Carpool" or "Star Trek 6." I'm embarrassed now that we did it, but at the time it didn't even seem that we had a choice.
